Dear Ankesh,
Lately i have been thinking a lot about India. Many people ask me, u living in states, a decent life, what are you giving back to your country(india)? I totally agreed the point of view that charity is not the only way to get the country out of poverty, since people get lazy and addicted to it. Now the concept of "rags-to-riches stories" sounds really good and according to me may help some people to motivate and do better in their life, i dont know how far its practically feasible though for every person.
I realized that population is the single biggest threat for india. India has close to 2% land of world and has 17% of the worlds population. So no matter what there is always going to be fight for basic necessities of life like food shelter and clothing. China, Malaysia and many other countries are been able to control their population in some sense. In most of the developed nation after having kids if things dont work, then you have to pay child support and all, in turn promoting less kids and population.
Since there is no Social Security and Health Care at old age, people continue to have kids which in turn at old age become bread winners. Poverty is a vicious cycle and i dont know from where to start, any comments, suggestions will be highly appreciated and feel free to email me shawnp7603@gmail.com

If you want to help raise awareness of the problem in Europe, why not look at www.eppcompetition.eu where young people are invited to picture a way out of poverty by making a 60 second film?

Interesting debate. I think there is no one remedy for problems of poverty because there is no one cause for it. Where there are resources and talent, but there is malaise and despair , hope and inspiration is needed, with practical help such as microfinancing. Where there is absolute poverty and rife by war and genocide, safety stabilisation and aid is needed. Where poverty is due to organised suppression like the caste system, social reform is needed. The thing is one situation can change to another, and flexing accordingly is needed. So, when teenage girls are getting pregnant for housing, then help them for 3-4 years on the condition that they train and educate themselves. Like Clinton said, Welfare is a second chance, not a way of life.
I see poverty as heterogeneous and there are stages of regression and development. and we need to identify and respond accordingly.

Very interesting article , although I think sometimes just plain help is necessary... if a man is hungry so much that he is almost dying, it's hard to motivate him to have pride etc..

Since people visiting this page, are already aware and immersed in the issue of eradicating poverty, I thought we should share this with you.

Please spare 6 minutes of your life and watch this film. Over 2,000,000 people have watched and shared this film, who care about hunger and human inequality. If you deem appropriate, please share it with your members, friends, students, and family - all who care about hunger and its impact on human race.

THE FILM : It is a TRUE STORY

Chicken a la Carte
Director: Ferdinand Dimadura | Genre: Drama |

This film is about the hunger and poverty brought about by Globalization. There are 10,000 people dying everyday due to hunger and malnutrition. This short film shows a forgotten portion of the society. The people who lives on the refuse of men to survive. What is inspiring is the hope and spirituality that never left this people.

...as for the 'developed' countries, witness the popularity of the lottery, scratch cards and mention crime, as a sign that these people are desperately hoping to get out of their predicament, often taking huge risks. If there was a better way out they'd take it.

An interesting and valuable post, but strikes me as simplistic and dangerous. The very poor, often malnourished, close to starvation and socially vulnerable, can't afford to take the necessary risks to aim beyond their meagre predicament. If someone has a child to feed, they can't be expected to invest their precious subsistence in a potentially risky business - they must struggle on as they have done. Also, having had no education themselves, how can they run the business? Many microcredit businesses just left people in more debt as the businesses failed because they were ripped off or mismanaged. To say that 'hope' is all that is needed is I think patronizing - this post is in danger of implying that all poor people are inventing their predicament due to emotional inability. In fact many poor people have been suckered into programs offering them hope, run by NGOs, that have left them ostracized from their communities and further impoverished.

Throw in regional conflict, economic exclusion, etc, and you have a much broader picture. I can't recommend the book "A Fine Balance" enough for another picture of the complex trap of poverty, as viewed from the bottom.

hey Ankesh

Great post.

Should be required reading in the UK. IN the last 10 years the government have pumped billions into the public sector - all they have done is put more people on welfare payments and bloat the hospital system and the school system with burocrats.

The UK has the highest number of teenage mothers in europe - if you're 14,15 or 16 and get pregnant, almost automatically you get housed by the council, get benefits etc etc - and the politicians wonder why we have such high percentages of young girls getting pregnant.

I could go on and on - but all I will say is keep writing great posts!
